Spin the Wheel

Can't decide where to eat, who goes first, or which chore you get? Put the options on the wheel and let it choose.

How to use it

  1. Type one option per line in the box. The wheel redraws as you type.
  2. Press Spin. After about four seconds the pointer at the top lands on the winner.
  3. Every result is logged under the wheel. Use Copy share link to send the same wheel to a group chat.

How the random pick works

With n options the tool needs a whole number from 0 to n−1. It draws a 32-bit value from crypto.getRandomValues, the same source browsers use for security keys. Simply taking that value modulo n would make some slices very slightly more likely, so values from the uneven tail are thrown away and redrawn (rejection sampling). Only after the winner is fixed does the wheel calculate how far to turn.

Ideas

Friday lunch

Pizza, tacos, sushi, burgers, salad, pasta. Spin once and stop arguing. If the group vetoes the result, remove it and spin again — the history shows what came up.

Cold-calling in class

Paste the class roster, switch on winner removal, and spin whenever you need a volunteer. Students can see the pick is random, which keeps it from feeling personal.

Giveaway on a stream

Add the entrants, share your screen and spin live. Copy the history afterwards so you have a record of the draw.

Limitations

  • Lists are not saved between visits. Keep the share link if you want to reuse a wheel.
  • For prize draws with legal rules (sweepstakes, raffles), check what your local regulations require for documenting the draw.

FAQ

Is the wheel actually fair?

Yes. The winning slice is chosen the moment you press Spin, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). The animation then lands on that slice. Every slice has the same chance, and how fast you click makes no difference.

Can I give one option better odds?

There is no weight setting, but you can type an option twice. Two copies of 'Pizza' on a six-line wheel gives pizza a 2-in-6 chance.

What does the share link contain?

Only your list of options, stored in the link itself. Nothing is saved on a server. Whoever opens the link gets the same wheel, but their spin is a new random draw.

How do I use it for a classroom or team rotation?

Turn on 'Remove the winner after each spin'. Each name drops off once it's picked, so everyone gets called exactly once before the wheel runs out.

Is there a limit on the number of options?

Up to 40. Long labels are shortened on the wheel itself, but the full text appears in the result and history.
